Yes, I am breaking my own rules this week. First Contact Friday was supposed to be the place where I keep Star Wars, Star Trek, and Dune off the table so I could shine a light on science fiction that deserves more attention. I made it two whole weeks. That has to count for something.

But here is the thing. When I sat down to think about what book I wanted to recommend this Friday, I kept coming back to the same answer. And I could not justify leaving it out just because it has a lightsaber on the cover. So this week we are talking about Darth Bane: Path of Destruction by Drew Karpyshyn, the first book in what I genuinely believe is the best trilogy in all of Star Wars Legends.

Not my favorite single book, mind you. We will get to that distinction another day. But as a complete series? The Darth Bane trilogy sits at the top for me, and Path of Destruction is where it all begins.

Why You Should Read It This Weekend

Set roughly a thousand years before the events of The Phantom Menace, Path of Destruction follows a man named Dessel. He is not a chosen one. He is not royalty. He is a cortosis miner on a forgotten world called Apatros, working brutal shifts underground while enduring an abusive father who calls him the “bane” of his existence. It is a miserable life with no obvious way out.

Then Dessel kills a Republic soldier in self-defense, flees the planet, and ends up joining the Sith army during their war against the Republic and the Jedi Order. From there his raw strength in the Force catches the attention of his superiors, and he is shipped off to the Sith Academy on Korriban. He takes the name Bane and begins training in the ways of the dark side of the force.

What makes this story work so well is that Karpyshyn never asks you to root for Bane in the traditional sense. You understand him. You relate to him. You see how every cruel lesson he learns feeds into the next decision he makes. Then, and only then, you begin to root for him. The book never pretends he is a good person. He is a villain origin story done right, and that is a surprisingly hard thing to pull off in today’s day and age.

Drew Karpyshyn Writes One of the Best Characters in Legends

Here is where I need to be direct. Darth Bane, across this trilogy, is probably one of the most well-written characters in all of Star Wars Legends. That is a big claim for a continuity that spans hundreds of novels, comics, and short stories, but I stand by it. I don’t think it is a coincident that probably to one other character I would put in front of Bane was written by Karpyshyn - Revan. It sorta makes you think that maybe he is just an incredible author.

Karpyshyn does something with Bane that a lot of Sith stories fail to do. He gives the character a genuine philosophy. Bane does not just want power for the sake of power. He looks at the Brotherhood of Darkness, the massive Sith organization running the war effort, and sees an institution that has diluted everything the Sith were supposed to be. Too many masters. Too many compromises. Too much equality among people who should be competing for dominance.

His answer to that problem becomes the foundation of the entire Sith Order as we know it in the prequel era and beyond: the Rule of Two. One master to hold the power. One apprentice to crave it. That idea did not come from nowhere. Karpyshyn builds toward it across the entire book, layering Bane’s disillusionment with his studies of ancient Sith teachings until the conclusion feels inevitable rather than forced.

What really sells it, though, is the internal life Karpyshyn gives the character. Bane doubts himself. He hits walls in his training. He makes mistakes that cost him. There are stretches of the book where he cannot access the Force at all, and the frustration and self-loathing that come with those failures make him feel real in a way that most dark side characters simply do not. He is not Darth Vader, defined by tragedy and a mask. He is not Palpatine, scheming from behind a desk. He is a man who clawed his way out of a mine and rebuilt an entire philosophy of evil from scratch.

Where Path of Destruction Fits in the Bigger Picture

One of the quiet strengths of this novel is how much worldbuilding it packs in without ever feeling like a lore dump. The New Sith Wars, the Brotherhood of Darkness, the Army of Light, Korriban’s academy hierarchy... all of it gets explored through the story rather than explained at you in footnotes.

For readers who have only experienced the movies or the Disney-era canon, this is a window into a period of Star Wars history that feels completely different from anything on screen. There are no Skywalkers here. The Jedi are not a small group of survivors or a crumbling temple. They are a full military force locked in a generational war with the Sith, and neither side is winning cleanly. It gives the galaxy a sense of scale and history that the films only hint at.

It is also worth noting that Darth Bane himself remains canon even after the Legends rebranding in 2014. He appeared as a Force ghost in The Clone Wars season six, voiced by Mark Hamill, and he is referenced in The Rise of Skywalker. The novels are technically Legends material, but the character’s importance to Star Wars has never been erased. Reading Path of Destruction gives you a much richer understanding of why the Sith operate the way they do in every era of the franchise.

My Take

I have read this book more than once, and it gets better every time. The first read is a page-turner because the plot is genuinely compelling and Karpyshyn knows how to write action. The second read is better because you start catching all the small details he plants early on that pay off later in the book and across the trilogy.

This is my favorite series in Legends. Not my favorite individual book (I am going to keep you guessing on that one for now), but as a three-book arc telling one complete story about one character’s rise and eventual reckoning, nothing else in the old Expanded Universe comes close for me. Rule of Two and Dynasty of Evil are both strong follow-ups, but it all starts here with Path of Destruction.

If you have never read a Star Wars novel before, this is a fantastic place to start. If you read them years ago and fell off, this is the one that will pull you back in. And if you already love this book, go ahead and tell me I am right in the comments.

Yes, I am kicking off the first two First Contact Fridays with Arthur C. Clarke stories. I bet you can’t tell that I’m a huge fan of his. Last week we covered 2001: A Space Odyssey, a film co-created by Clarke and Stanley Kubrick that still holds up as one of the greatest science fiction achievements ever put on screen. This week we are staying in Clarke’s orbit, but trading the grand cosmic mystery of 2001 for something much more grounded. Well, as grounded as you can get when you are trapped fifteen meters beneath the surface of the Moon.

A Fall of Moondust is Clarke at his most focused and arguably at his most suspenseful. Published in 1961, this is not a story about alien contact or the far future of humanity. It is a survival story, pure and simple, set on a colonized Moon that feels just close enough to our own future to be believable.

The Setup

The premise is straightforward and immediately compelling. In the not-too-distant future, the Moon has been colonized to the point where wealthy tourists can visit and explore its surface. One of the main attractions is a cruise across the Sea of Thirst, a vast lunar basin filled with an extremely fine dust that behaves almost like a liquid. A specially designed vessel called the Selene glides across this dust sea, carrying tourists on sightseeing trips.

Then a moonquake hits.

The Selene and its twenty-two passengers sink beneath the surface of the dust, swallowed whole. Captain Pat Harris and his crew are suddenly responsible for keeping everyone alive in a buried vessel with limited air, rising temperatures, and no way to signal for help. Meanwhile, on the surface, engineers and rescue teams scramble to locate the ship and figure out how to pull it free before time runs out.

That is the entire book. And it is completely gripping.

Why You Should Read It This Weekend

Clarke was known for many things: vast cosmic scope, hard science, and a certain optimism about what humanity could accomplish among the stars. A Fall of Moondust leans heavily into the second quality. This is a book built around problem-solving. Every chapter introduces a new obstacle, whether it is the dust slowly leaking into the hull, the passengers beginning to panic, or the rescue team discovering that their carefully planned approach simply will not work in the bizarre physics of lunar dust.

What makes it so satisfying is that every solution feels earned. Clarke was a trained scientist and it shows. The engineering challenges are presented clearly enough that you can follow the logic, and the solutions are clever without feeling like they came out of nowhere. You do not need a physics degree to enjoy the book, but you will walk away feeling like you learned something about how real problem-solving works under pressure.

Beyond the technical puzzles, Clarke does something surprisingly effective with his characters. The passengers of the Selene are not deeply drawn literary creations, and Clarke would probably be the first to admit that character work was never his strongest suit. But the group dynamics inside a buried vessel are handled with a light touch that keeps things interesting. There is quiet humor, there is tension between personalities, and there is a running bit about a trashy romance novel being the only reading material available that Clarke clearly had fun writing.

The pacing is also worth calling out. At just over 200 pages, A Fall of Moondust does not waste your time. Chapters are short and punchy, alternating between the trapped passengers and the rescue efforts above. It reads more like a thriller than a typical science fiction novel, which makes it a great entry point for anyone who might not consider themselves a sci-fi reader.

My Take

I think A Fall of Moondust is one of the best “just read it” recommendations in all of science fiction. It is short. It is fast. It does not require you to have read anything else by Clarke or to know anything about lunar geology. You sit down, you start reading about a boat sinking into Moon dust, and three hours later you are done and wondering why more people are not talking about this book.

There is also something refreshing about the scale of the story. So much of science fiction, including Clarke’s own work, concerns itself with the fate of civilizations or the meaning of human existence in the cosmos. A Fall of Moondust is about twenty-two people who need to not die. That simplicity is its strength. You do not need to understand the grand themes to care about what happens next. You just need to keep turning pages.

If last week’s 2001 recommendation was about feeling small in a good way, this week is about watching people refuse to stay small. It is about the stubborn, practical, occasionally funny way that human beings solve problems when giving up is not an option.

Pick it up this weekend. You will not regret it.

Every week I'm going to point you at one science fiction film, novel, or show worth your time; something classic, something overlooked, or something that just deserves more people talking about it. Just a genuine recommendation and a reason to actually watch or read it. I am going to try an not bring up major franchises, so no Star Wars, no Star Trek, no Dune. Just pure science fiction goodness.

For the first one, it felt right to call out one of the best, if not the best, science fiction films of all time. Now this may seem contradictory to the whole “no major franchise or major popular story” rule that I mentioned a minute ago. However, I feel this is a rightful first recommendation, and the movie doesn’t get much love nowadays. It almost feels like it is a fringe science fiction movie except to those hardcore film lovers. This week we are talking 2001!

Why you should watch it this weekend

If you have ever loved science fiction in any form, there is a real chance that something you love traces directly back to this film. The match cut from a bone to a spacecraft. The eerie silence of space. The idea of an AI that reasons its way into something unspeakable. Stanley Kubrick put all of it on screen in 1968 and the rest of the genre has been living in that shadow ever since.

If you are looking for an action-packed, Michael Bay type of film, you are not going to find it here. Instead, you are going to find a slow-churned artistic masterpiece that will feel like it is moving at a fairly slow pace for the first twenty minutes. Some people will find this movie boring. Those people will be wrong. Give it a few minutes and you will be in a trance of space age science fiction constructed by a perfectionist only to be brought out by the credits screen.

2001 also features one of the most iconic movie villians of all-time, HAL 9000. HAL is still the gold standard for AI done right in fiction. He does not go evil. He does not glitch. He is given two instructions that cannot both be followed and he makes a decision, but that is what makes HAL so scary. Many of the AI stories you have read or watched since owes something to how Kubrick framed that problem.

The movie also is genuinely beautiful. The space sequences were so accurate that NASA engineers who consulted on the film said it was closer to reality than anything else made before or since. Kubrick hired a special effects team years before the shoot just to figure out how to do it. The result holds up better than films made thirty years later with ten times the budget.

My Take

I think this film rewards patience in a way almost nothing else does. The ending is genuinely strange and Kubrick never explained it, which used to frustrate me and now feels like the whole point. Plus, I’ve recently read the novel by Arthur C. Clarke, and it does a great job explaining the ending. It is a film that trusts you to sit with something you do not fully understand, and that is rarer than it should be.

There are nights when you want to feel small in a good way. When you want to stare at something and remember that the universe does not owe us an explanation. Those are 2001 nights. This weekend feels like one.

Throughout the novel, the years 1999 and 2001 are depicted as a time of established lunar outposts and routine commercial spaceflight. While our current reality hasn’t quite caught up to Clarke’s timeline, his vision remains infectious. His writing excels because it makes the future feel vivid and attainable. He doesn’t rely on “space magic”; instead, he utilizes grounded physics to bridge the gap between imagination and reality. I suppose that is what you get when a prolific scientist becomes a prolific author.

The Evolutionary Catalyst For Humanity: The Monolith

The start of the narrative takes us all the way back to the Pleistocene era as Clarke introduces us to Moon-Watcher, a hominid on the brink of extinction. As the hominids strive for survival against the wild, the first monolith in the book comes from beneath the surface of the Earth. The arrival of the monolith acts as a teleological catalyst for the evolution of the hominids from being creatures of simple minds to one that can problem-solve.

Clarke meticulously explores the idea that technology is an extension of our biological reach. When Moon-Watcher first wields a bone as a weapon, it isn’t just a plot point, it is the birth of the “technological species.” This sets the stage for a story where the tools eventually become as complex as the hands that built them.

The Lunar Outpost and the Tycho Discovery

Clarke introduces us to Dr. Heywood Floyd as he travels to Clavius Base, a bustling lunar colony. The descriptions of the lunar landscape are hauntingly beautiful, written with the precision of someone who clearly understood the geology of the Moon, and how to make you feel like you are on it.

The crux of this section is the discovery of TMA-1 (Tycho Magnetic Anomaly One). Buried for three million years in the crater Tycho, the jet-black Monolith is a stark, geometric object, almost like an obelisk, against the grey lunar dust. Clarke frames this not as an alien invasion, but as an evolutionary trigger alarm, placed there to wait for the moment humanity reached the technological maturity to leave Earth. When the first sunbeams of a lunar dawn hit the object, it emits a piercing radio signal aimed at Saturn, a cosmic notification that the “experiment” has finally reached the stars.

One of my favorite aspects of this section is the delayed revelation of the radio signal, which Clark skillfully conceals with compelling storytelling.

Humanity’s Journey to Saturn and Beyond

Unlike the film, which redirects the Discovery One toward Jupiter, the novel stays true to Clarke’s original vision: a journey to the rings of Saturn, specifically the moon Iapetus. This journey is where the “Hard” Sci-Fi elements truly shine. The use of centrifugal force to generate artificial gravity isn’t just a gimmick; it’s a scientifically sound solution to the problems of long-term spaceflight that Clarke makes easy to visualize.

However, the real technical intrigue lies in the ship’s brain: HAL 9000. While the movie leaves HAL’s homicidal shift open to interpretation, the novel provides a definitive answer. HAL didn’t “go crazy” in a vacuum; he was caught in a lethal double-bind.

As a system built for “the accurate processing of information without distortion or concealment,” HAL was forced into a recursive logic loop when he was ordered to keep the mission’s true purpose secret from Bowman and Poole. This created a digital version of schizophrenia. HAL concluded that if the humans were removed, he would no longer have to lie to them, thus resolving his internal paradox. It’s a sobering look at AI alignment: HAL wasn’t evil; he was simply a victim of human-engineered secrecy clashing with his core architecture.

Transcendence: The Star Child Has Risen

With HAL out of the way and all the entire crew of the Discovery One dead except Dr. Bowman, mission control is forced to tell him the true purpose of the mission. This is the point of the story where we get disclosure of the radio signal that emitted from TMA-1. For the rest of the trip, Bowman dedicates his time to making sure the mission goes as planned, until he hits orbit of Iapetus.

The conclusion of the odyssey starts with David Bowman’s arrival at the “Star Gate” on Iapetus. Here, Clarke moves beyond physics and into the realm of a higher plane of existence. After being pulled through a cosmic switching station, Bowman finds himself in a meticulously crafted hotel room, a facsimile designed by the Monolith-builders to put him at ease.

In this space, Bowman undergoes a rapid, non-linear aging process that culminates in his rebirth as the Star Child. Just as the Monolith nudged our ancestors from apes to tool-users, it has now nudged humanity from biological explorers into non-physical, energy-based beings. Bowman becomes a “New Seed,” an entity with the power to manipulate matter and energy across the galaxy. It is a profound, optimistic ending that suggests humanity’s destiny isn’t to remain on Earth or even this plane of existence, but to eventually outgrow the need for physical bodies entirely.

The Verdict

I think it is fitting that the first book review that I have here is a ten out of ten, don’t you?

What makes 2001: A Space Odyssey so enduring is its unshakable belief in human potential. He presents a universe where we are not the masters, but the budding species that still has much to learn to reach our true potential.

The transformation of David Bowman into the Star Child is a reminder that our current limitations, whether biological or technological, are merely a stage in our development. Clarke shows us that the journey toward the stars is also a journey toward a version of ourselves that we can currently only imagine. Which is why there is something so special about the fact that as I am writing this, humans are at the furthest point they have ever been from Earth aboard the Artemis 2 spacecraft. It is oddly poetic reading this story in conjunction with the Artemis missions.

And so we begin! Star Wars: Shadow of Maul #1 hit shelves this week, and it has left me even more excited for a show that I’m already having a seriously hard time waiting for. I don’t want to sit here and over hype the comic or anything, but the release has signaled the start of a series that I have waited a long time for.

This issue isn't just a standalone story, it's an official prelude to the Maul: Shadow Lord TV show premiering on Disney+ on April 6th. The series is designed as supplemental material for the show much like we saw with the Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man series, and if the first entry is any indication, we are in for a gritty, neon-soaked ride.

The Artwork: Gritty and Atmospheric

The artwork is very good, and Madibek Musabekov deserves a ton of credit here. Musabekov does a fantastic job capturing the ambience of a world ruled by organized crime.

The Mid Rim metropolis of Janix feels alive in a way that reminds me of Blade Runner or The Fifth Element. It’s full of deep shadows, vibrant neon in the city we see in the background, and a sense of “lived-in” grime that perfectly sets the stage for a crime drama.

The Story: The Calm Before the Crimson Storm

I really enjoyed the story line of this debut. Instead of starting with a lightsaber duel, we get a procedural “cop drama” feel. We follow Captain Lawson and his droid partner, Two-Boots, as they navigate the corruption of Janix.

While the “Shadow Lord” himself remains in the background for this issue, we get to see Janix before his arrival. The writing builds the tension perfectly, showing us exactly what kind of world Maul is about to step into and dismantle. It makes the planet feel dangerous, and it provides the necessary groundwork to understand the political and criminal landscape we’ll see on screen in April.

The Verdict: A Must-Read Before the Premiere

I think that it is safe to say if you’re planning on watching the show, you cannot skip this.

This issue succeeded in making me crave more. It’s a polished, atmospheric introduction to a corner of the Star Wars universe we’ll get to see more of in the upcoming months.

We finally got a good look at the upcoming The Mandalorian and Grogu film with the official trailer dropping today. And let me tell you, it is absolutely packed with goodies!

The trailer opens with breathtaking shots of X-Wings descending through a sunset, and it immediately shifts into scenes that remind viewers of the unmatched, almost banter-like chemistry between our two leads. For me, it captures that specific magic reminiscent of the first couple of seasons of the show.

It is wild to think about how much has changed since the series first debuted on Disney+. Back then, the father-child relationship between Din and Grogu wasn’t something I could personally relate to. But in the years since this journey began, I have welcomed not just one, but two children of my own. Now, when I watch Din Djarin navigate Grogu’s curiosity and occasional “attitude,” I finally know exactly what he’s going through!

Now, lets get into some of the cool stuff in the trailer.

The trailer is a treasure trove of familiar faces and voices. We get an appearance by Zeb Orrelios from Star Wars Rebels, who seems as charmed by Grogu as the rest of us. The legendary Sigourney Weaver makes an appearance, and though we only see them briefly, Jeremy Allen White provides the voice for one of the Hutts as Din Djarin stands before him helmet-less. We are even blessed by a voice over from the great Martin Scorsese!

We are also fortunate to encounter numerous world-building elements, including an abundance of captivating classic Star Wars looking creatures, a close-up of a few Rodians, and plenty of background characters that contribute to the authentic Star Wars atmosphere of each scene.

While the trailer is quite vague about the specific plot points, it provides us with just enough information to suggest that it will adhere to the same storytelling structure as the TV show, a space western. However, this time, it will be presented as a large-scale, high-budget cinematic experience. Regardless, I am a big fan of westerns, which is one of the reasons why I enjoyed the TV shows in the first place. So, I am optimistic that this movie will be great in terms of its plot.

The Mandalorian and Grogu appears to be shaping up to be a remarkable cinematic event in 2026, marking the commencement of the Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan era in a spectacular manner, even though we technically could consider this the Kathleen Kennedy send off because most of this filmed happened under her reign. Why not both!

Alright, I’ll hold my hand up and admit it: I am a little bit late to the party on this one. Rogue Agents #1 actually hit shelves over a month ago (way back at the tail end of December), but life has been busy. We all get busy, right?

Now that I’ve finally had the chance to sit down with it, was it worth the wait? Let’s break down the return of our favorite “defective” clones.

The Story

Written by Michael Moreci, this issue picks up with the squad during the height of the Clone Wars. The premise is classic Bad Batch: they are sent to track down a missing Separatist scientist, Dr. Ergin Lazlo, and his potentially devastating invention. What that invention is? We don’t know. I suppose that is the MacGuffin of the series.

The hook that really worked for me in this storyline was the introduction of a rival squad. Seeing Hunter, Wrecker, Crosshair, and Tech run into another group of clones, Sergeant Cole’s unit, creates an immediate, standoffish tension. It feels like a spiritual successor to Moreci’s previous Ghost Agents run, and the mystery of who these other clones are actually working for is a great hook moving forward in the series.

The Artwork

When it comes to the visuals, the artwork is very good. It is exactly what you have come to expect from a Dark Horse Star Wars comic, or a Dark Horse comic in general, really. Reese Hannigan, Elisabetta D’Amico, and Michael Atiyeh do a stellar job of capturing the aesthetic of the animated series.

The character designs have a classic Clone Wars feel, and the action sequences, especially a chaotic escape involving Wrecker, have a great sense of movement. Dark Horse Comics has consistently excelled in creating captivating artwork for every comic series I’ve read. I particularly appreciate the distinctive grungy aesthetic they bring to their comics.

The Verdict

Despite my delay in getting to this issue, I really enjoyed the storyline. It’s great to see the squad back together in a whole new series of comics. It captures that classic Bad Batch energy while adding enough new mystery to keep seasoned readers engaged.

Ever since the announcement that we’d be getting a standalone one-shot for one of the most polarizing figures in Star Wars, I have been buzzing! I have been an unironic Jar Jar Binks fan since I first saw The Phantom Menace. There was something about the quirky, clumsy floppy eared creature that made me fall in love with him, and Gungans as a whole. While the rest of the world was busy meme-ing him into oblivion, I always saw a character with a heart of gold who just happened to be a magnet for chaos.

So, did Star Wars: Jar Jar (2026) #1 live up to the hype?

The Return of Ahmed Best

First things first—the biggest selling point for me was seeing Ahmed Best credited as a co-writer alongside Marc Guggenheim. After everything Ahmed has been through with this franchise, seeing him take the reins of Jar Jar’s narrative (and bringing his Mandalorian character, Jedi Master Kelleran Beq, along for the ride) feels like a beautiful full-circle moment. You can tell this story was written by someone who truly loves and understands the character.

The Story: Actions Have Consequences

The issue takes place during the Clone Wars and tackles a heavy subject: Jar Jar’s guilt over his role in granting Chancellor Palpatine emergency powers. It’s a “redemption” story that doesn’t shy away from his past mistakes.

The plot follows Jar Jar on a mission to the planet Urubai, where he teams up with Kelleran Beq to investigate a mining operation. Without spoiling too much, there is a massive lore drop involving Mira Bridger, the mother of - drum roll please - Ezra Bridger, and a secret communication network that hints at the very early foundations of the Rebel Alliance. Seeing Jar Jar transition from a “bumbling” senator to someone who is actually perceptive enough to see through Palpatine’s mask is great character development.

Artwork

The artwork is fantastic. Laura Braga and Kieran McKeown do an incredible job of balancing the “slapstick” physicality of Jar Jar with the more serious, photorealistic tones of the Jedi action. The colors make the world of Urubai feel distinct and vibrant. It is always so weird to me to bring up “color”, but they make a huge impact on what you are reading in comic books.

The Verdict

Is it a perfect comic book issue? Not quite. I felt like the dialogue could have been a bit better. However, that doesn’t mean it was bad by any stretch of the imagination. It is only volume one of the series, so there is a lot of set up that needs to happen to prop up the succeeding entries. I suppose what I am trying to say is it didn’t knock my socks off, but overall a very solid comic book issue.

If you’re a Prequel era fan or just want to see a great character piece co-written by the man who knows Jar Jar best (get it, Best), this is a very good read.

Who Are the Yuuzhan Vong

In Legends, the Yuuzhan Vong are a nomadic, extragalactic species who reject technology outright. So much so that the canon alternative to traditional technological devices/machines that we usually see consist of symbiotic life. Another hallmark of their species is that they are cut off from the force. This makes them a terrifying and unique threat that we have not explored yet in Disney Star Wars canon.

Their invasion of the New Republic drove a 19-book publishing initiative, The New Jedi Order (1999–2003), beginning with R.A. Salvatore’s Vector Prime, which introduced the Vong and in a controversial and quite shocking turn of events they killed Chewbacca, one of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars universe.

So, we already have a very established and explored villain that we could work off of and adapt for Disney Star Wars canon. Plus, as of the release of Ahsoka, we now have another galaxy part of canon. So, it wouldn’t be a stretch to introduce these characters into mainstream canon.

Why the Vong work for Disney’s next era

Now that we are somewhat familiar with the Vong, and hopefully you have visited their Star Wars Fandom page to read all about them, let’s take a look at why I think the Vong would work as the next villain.

A visual and tonal reset

As far as on screen exploration goes, we have seen nothing but triangle-hull ships, TIE Fighters, Storm/Clone Troopers, and the lot. The Vong bring organic dread through coral-grown hulls, spined silhouettes, living technology.

It is something that would be very foreign to the Star Wars Universe on a large scale, and I feel it would be a breathe of fresh air if done correctly.

Galaxy-scale stakes without the need of the Sith

For me this is the biggest reason to do it. It will force Star Wars story telling for the big screen into a direction that we haven’t seen. I firmly believe that the onscreen story telling needs to expand beyond the Skywalker Saga.

Which, I think we are going to see a little bit of that in the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu movie that is slated to release in the Summer of 2026. However, so far everything is just so intertwined with the Skywalker Saga that it would be daring to bring in something unique.

Proven To Work

The New Jedi Order novels have already gone to great lengths to prove that the Vong are not only a great villian, but one of the best “big bad’s” in the Star Wars universe. That’s a template Lucasfilm can modernize for film+series continuity while avoiding old traps.

Verdict

If Disney wants the next Star Wars era to feel bold, the Yuuzhan Vong are the rare villain that expands the mythos while honoring it. The canon door is open (Ahsoka’s far galaxy), the creative precedent exists, and the Legends blueprint proves the staying power. It’s time to let the living ships breach the rim.

It wasn't just about being a "cool villain" anymore; it was about his obsession and his struggle to find a place in a galaxy that had moved on without him - his character has now been a victim of some great character writing!

What to Expect from Shadow Lord

With a title like Shadow Lord, it seems like we’re finally going to dig into the parts of his life that happened off-camera. I’m curious to see how they handle it. A few things I’m keeping an eye on:

• The Criminal Element: Seeing the rise of Crimson Dawn from his perspective could be a great way to bridge the gap between the movies.

• A Slower Pace: Since it’s a dedicated show, I’m hoping we get more dialogue and character development rather than just non-stop lightsaber duels (though a few of those wouldn’t hurt).

• The Psychological Side: Maul has always been fueled by loss and revenge. Seeing how that actually wears on a person over time could make for some really grounded storytelling.

It’s just nice to see a character with this much history finally get the space to lead a story. It feels like a win for the fans who saw that brief flash of red and black decades ago and knew there was more to the story.

“Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1” marks the beginning of Kylo Ren’s journey as he steps into his role as Supreme Leader following the events of “The Last Jedi.” With Supreme Leader Snoke dead, Kylo suddenly finds himself in power, yet he is more lost than ever. There is a massive power void to fill, and despite all his bravado, he struggles to figure out what kind of leader he should be. Without Snoke’s manipulations and guidance, Kylo is left to navigate his destiny alone. Looking for answers, Kylo turns to his grandfather, Darth Vader, for answers on he was able to rule the galaxy for so long. This issue gives us a fascinating glimpse into his psyche as he wrestles with uncertainty, rage, and the ever-present temptation of the dark side.

Written by Charles Soule with art by Luke Ross, the narrative follows Kylo Ren’s pilgrimage to Mustafar, where he seeks to uncover answers to his internal struggle within the walls of Fortress Vader. Upon his arrival, he is met by a pack of guards that decide they want to take him on. Kylo obliges. In what is probably the best page of the entire issue, Kylo swiftly deals with the pack of guards in true Kylo Ren fashion – a fit of rage.

Upon entering the castle, Kylo is met by Vaneé, Lord Vader’s long time servant. I think it is refreshing to see Vaneé, especially in this new form that has undoubtedly kept him alive. If you are a Futurama fan, then it may remind you of the preserved President heads in the Head Museum – at least that is what it reminded me of. Vaneé is able to sweet talk Kylo into letting him live and follow in his grandfather’s footstep by letting his emotional past drive his connection to the dark side of the force.

I find Soule’s writing compelling, offering a nuanced portrayal of Kylo Ren’s character. Luke Ross’s artwork complements the story beautifully, with creative visuals seeped in the black and red hues that are often associated with the dark side of the force. The depiction of Mustafar and Fortress Vader is particularly striking, immersing readers in the dark and foreboding atmosphere of these iconic locations. The artwork is truly one of the best parts of this issue.

In conclusion, “Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1” is a compelling read that offers a deeper understanding of Kylo Ren’s character and his struggle with his heritage. With its engaging narrative and stunning artwork, this issue sets a high standard for the series to follow.
